Chapter 07: Mysts of the Past

As Chenoa and Joshua were studying, Princess Serenity came into the room. "Hello brother, sister." She walked over to Peace and bent down to pet him. "Today is my 16th birthday, so I am not studying today. We are going to have a grand ball. Everybody will be there."

"Will we be able to go Serenity?" Chenoa asked. "We get to go to so few balls. I know it's because Joshua and I are adopted, but we would enjoy it so much."

"I don't see why not, but we must ask mother first."

"Serenity, if we are able to go can I invite a friend of mine?" Joshua asked, looking a little more desperate than he should have.

"Josh, it's not up to me. It's up to mom." Serenity said, rolling her eyes. "But I don't see why not. All the Planetary Princesses will be there along Prince Endymion and his generals. I think even a few of the ambassadors from some other planetary systems will be there. So what would one more person mean?" She frowned as if something suddenly occurred to her. "Unless it is that magician's daughter. She is nothing but trouble."

Joshua was taken aback by the statement, just staring at his sister for a moment. Then he suddenly excused himself gruffly and walked out of the room.

"Serenity," Chenoa said, "Urami is a very good friend of Joshua's. They are very close. I think you may have offended him."

"Chenoa, it's not like they are courting or anything," Serenity said, waving the incident off. "Neither of you are of age yet. Anyway, mother said she has to know all of your friends, and I know for a fact she does not know Urami."

Chenoa gave up and left the room, heading for the main hallway to see the decorations going up. As she gets there, she sees the now familiar Prince of Earth, Endymion. Looking back towards the Prince, she saw him talking to a strange yet familiar person. Just then Urami came running in, knocking her off balance and into the prince. As she tried to catch herself, she felt somebody catch her. Before she was even standing, she is blushed and tried to make out an apology.

"I .. I am so... so…"

A finger goes over her lips to hush her. "It's okay young lady. I saw what happened and I am sure Prince Endymion has no hard feelings."

Chenoa looks up to the one that spoke to her. Their eyes locked and Chenoa felt her heart tug. Quickly getting back to her feet, Chenoa stammered, "I... I have to go and see my mother, the Queen. I... I again... I am sorry for bumping into you Prince Endymion." Running off, she glanced back to the stranger and then ran up the nearby stairs.

As she is going up the stairs she saw Princess Mars coming down with a handsome man with short blonde hair... Chenoa realized it was Jadeite, one of Endymion's generals. She continued by them and up to her mother's room.

She knocked on the door. "Mother? May I enter?" After the queen bids her in, she immediately asked her question, "May Joshua and I go to Princess Serenity's ball? I know we aren't of royal blood and all, but we would really enjoy celebrating her birthday with her. And we are 14. It's not like we are too young."

"My sweet Chenoa," Queen Serenity said after sending a handmaid out for something, "my morning dove. If I were to say you could go, who would be your chaperone?"

"Joshua could be my chaperone. We are always together anyway and he wants to go just as badly as I do. Please mother, let us go."

Chenoa's attention is drawn to the handmaid re-entering the room with a box. Queen Serenity opens it and picks up the gown inside. It is a majestic purple gown with a fitted bodice, a drop yoke front and a very full skirt. Metallic silver is embroidered in around the seams. She smiled knowingly at her daughter and said, "Seems this dress was made for you Chenoa. Would you like to try it on?"

While Chenoa tried on the dress happily, there was a knock at the door.

"Chenoa? Are you decent? I really need to talk to this gentlemen."

"Yes, mother. We're just are playing with my hair. Should I wear it up?"

Unaware that the gentleman has already entered the room, Chenoa turned around holding her hair up. As soon as her eyes settled on the stranger's, they lock.

"Up is good Chenoa. That way there is a contrast since your hair is so close to the color of the dress."

Chenoa just nodded.

"Sir Kodia, what is this news you bring me?" Queen Serenity asked the stranger, who is still locked in a gaze with Chenoa. Positioning herself between her daughter and the man, she asked the question again.

"Oh, I am sorry your majesty. It seems there has been a disturbance in the extreme outer solar system. Like a portal. We are sending Sailors Uranus and Neptune to investigate it." As Kodia finished his sentence, he was drawn back to Chenoa as her and the maiden are fussing with her hair. Walking over to them, he spoke again. "May I suggest that you wear it pulled up and in curls with wisps of hair in the front curled around your face?"

"Kodia, that is enough. We all have a ball to get ready for," the queen remarked sternly.

"I am sorry my Queen. I bid you well and I will see you at Princess Serenity's ball." Kodia bowed to the ladies and exited the room.

Chenoa and the maiden finished up with her hair (taking Kodia's suggestions to heart). Then Princess Serenity came in, all ready for the ball in her white gown with golden trim. Not far behind her is Joshua wearing a black jacket tuxedo with deep purple accents.

"Seems my little children aren't so little," the queen remarked wistfully. "Especially considering both Chenoa and Joshua are taller than Serenity. This will be a wonderful night for all of us."

She just hoped all nights would be.

-----

The Royal Family left the Queen's chambers and walked to the top of the stairs. As they look down, Prince Endymion and the stranger Queen Serenity called Kodia are there.

"Mother, what is he doing there?" Chenoa asked as her heart skipped a beat.

"Kodia is my brother-in-law. Albeit he is much younger than Sen'ou..." Queen Serenity looked down for a moment and took a deep breath. "Come. Let us enjoy the ball."

With that Joshua and Princess Serenity ran down the stairs as Chenoa walked with the Queen. "Mother, what is going on? What was the energy or whatever Sir Kodia was talking about?"

"Chenoa, now is not the time. We are to have fun tonight. This is one of few balls you will be attending. So enjoy it."

As the two got to the bottom of the stairs, Kodia steps between them offering an arm to each. "My I escort you two fine looking ladies?" He glanced to the Queen for her approval, and then looked to Chenoa, probably a little longer than he should have.

Chenoa glanced around the ball room and saw the planetary princess, save the Outers talking with some of Endymion's generals. Princess Rei was with the blonde haired man, Jadeite. Princess Ami was with an attractive long haired man that is on the short and slender side. Princess Minako was nowhere to be seen (off with one of her various suitors no doubt) and Princess Makoto was alone near the arched doors that lead to the garden. Then Chenoa got a shock as she watched Prince Endymion and Princess Serenity going outside hand in hand. Chenoa couldn't understand why the girl would ditch her own ball…

*CRASH*

Queen Serenity sighed, shaking her head. "Oh dear... Kodia, watch Chenoa for me. I must go see what that is." Queen Serenity left the two together and went off to see what the loud noise was.

Chenoa looked at her new chaperone and blushed. "I... I ... "

"Would you like for me to get you something to drink Princess Chenoa?" Kodia asked sweetly.

"Y...Ye..." After the failed attempt at speaking, she just nodded her head so he knows she does.

Kodia smiled and excuses himself to get them some drinks. While he is gone Urami comes up behind her. "Boo!"

Chenoa shrieked, whipping around and grasps Urami's arm. As she grasped Urami's arm, her hand began to glow and Urami fell to the floor.

Joshua, who was nearby, came up quickly. "Chenoa! What did you do?" He picked up Urami and took her to a nearby chair, Chenoa right behind him.

"I didn't do anything! She scared me and I grabbed her arm." Chenoa started to panic because she knew this is the very reason why their mother didn't want them at too many social events. "I... I... I guess I should just leave!"

Chenoa ran outside towards the old castle on the hill off a ways from the Palace. "Maybe I can hide there. Nobody lives there anyway." Chenoa continued on her trek, wishing she had at least changed clothes first. It was very hard to run in a ball gown. "I wish I was there already."

Suddenly a portal opened right in front of Chenoa, and she ran right into it. When she came out, she found herself at the Castle entrance. "How in the world?"

"It's called portalling."

Chenoa spun around to see Kodia right behind her. "Did you do it?"

"Nope. You did." Kodia looked at her, obviously amused. "Why did you come here of all places?"

"Because this is forbidden ground from the Senshi and Princess Serenity. Since I am not royal blood or a Senshi, I can come here."

"You aren't of royal blood? How is that? You are Queen Serenity's daughter. And I know she has only had one husband." At the thought of Lord Sen'ou, Kodia looks down to the ground. "Would you like to come into my Castle?"

"In order as asked... No, adoption, and sure. Why not?"

Kodia walked into the Castle with Chenoa following. When they reached a grand room with marble walls and gold and silver accents, Kodia offered her a seat. "Would you like some Saturn Tea?"

Not quite sure what exactly Saturn Tea was or how it would affect her she answered, "Sure. I would love some." Kodia poured her some of the tea, and unknown to Chenoa the tea leaves had healing qualities as well as inebriating qualities. The two sat and talked for some time and Chenoa drank several cups of the tea in the process.

"Chenoa?" Kodia asked after some time.

"Yes Kodia?" she responded, looking straight into his eyes and leaning towards him.

"You should at least let your mother know where you are." Trying to resist the temptation of even kissing her, Kodia started to get up.

As if on cue, Chenoa throws herself in his arms crying, "You have to let me stay. They want to kill me and my brother! And after tonight, they may do it."

He put space between the two of them both because of protocol and he wanted to see her face when he spoke to her. "Chenoa, nobody is going to kill you. You are far too beautiful for that to happen." Then it struck him. The twins that Lord Europa has been talking about destroying… the twins of Saturn!

"Chenoa, what happened tonight? Why did your brother yell at you?" Kodia tried to get answers from her, but she was crying and soon fell asleep, exhausted in his arms.

"Oh Goddess... I can't take sides in this. I am Queen Serenity's adviser. Why have I let this girl affect me so?"

-----

"CHENOA! GET OUT HERE NOW! Mother is looking for you and I know you are in there!"

"Stay quiet, morning dove." Kodia said as he gets up and goes to the Castle entrance. Upon opening the door, he isn't very surprised to see Chenoa's brother, Joshua, standing there.

"Where is my sister?!" Joshua demanded. "I know she is here! Let me in!"

"I'm sorry Joshua, but I do not know what you are talking about." Kodia said coolly.

"Damn it! I said I want to see her, and I will!" Joshua pushed past Kodia and went into the castle, continually screaming for his sister. After frantically searching the entire castle, he saw no one anywhere. Not even so much as a servant. He then stalked back to Kodia, who was calmly standing in the main entrance. "What have you done with her?"

"Dear boy, I do not know what you are talking about. You have looked through out the Castle yourself. She is not here." Kodia silently commended himself on having the foresight to place Chenoa in a hidden room.

"I will be back for her. I swear that Kodia! You will not do to my sister what your brother did to my mother!" Joshua turned and left, still furious.

"Kodia?" Chenoa said as she came up behind him. "Why did you lie for me? And to my brother?"

Kodia turned to Chenoa and embraced her. "Chenoa, you and your brother are in grave danger. Lord Europa wants you destroyed. He believes you and your brother are too strong too be allowed to stay in the Moon Kingdom. Queen Serenity's rule over the Senshi council is not as powerful as one may think."

"Kodia…"

"Hush child. We must think of something. You can't stay here forever…"

-----

Chenoa lay on a beach with Kodia at sunset. After watching it deep beneath the sea before them, Kodia got up, helping Chenoa once he was upright. "We had better get you back home before your mother notices you are out past curfew."

Chenoa looked at Kodia, and then started to walk up the beach of the Sea of Serenity. Kodia called out to her, but she only walked faster. When he finally managed to reach her again, she was crying.

"Kodia… I know we will never be married in the Silver Millennium, and it bothers me. I want to spend all eternity with you. And…" Chenoa paused before resuming again, even quieter than before. "I am afraid to give all of me to you. As much as I want to."

Kodia gently lifted Chenoa's face, shocked over this revelation. He smiled softly and said, "Chenoa, you are too young to make such decisions. As for us being married… We will. We just have to wait my love. We just… have to convince your mother."

Chenoa softly pulled away and took off running, knowing that that was never going to happen. He quickly noted that she was headed in the Castle of the Ancients, rather than her home. Knowing he would never be able to catch up with her, he quickly formed a portal to his home… But even after waiting a few moments, he realizes that she isn't there. He called out to her, looking around frantically for his beloved… And just happened to glance out the window…

Where Chenoa jumped into the sea after asking for Tranquility's protection. She swam out and eventually Kodia can no longer see her. And while he knew that she was all right, he was still worried as all he knew about the Sea of Tranquility is that it is home of the Power of the Ancients, and that his Chenoa might be messing around with powers beyond her understanding… and her control.

----- Under the Sea -----

Chenoa was pulled under the sea to a cavern far below the surface, filled with not water, but air. She soon saw a lady that looked a lot like Queen Serenity, save her hair style which resembled more of Pluto's than Serenity's.

"Why have I been called here?"

"My are we a confused child… First you pray that I protect you before you dive into my sea, and then you don't know who I am?"

Chenoa bowed, flustered. "I am sorry Goddess Tranquility. I did not know it was you. Why have you asked me here?"

Tranquility said nothing as she walked up to the young girl and touched her forehead. "You, spirit of Saturn… Once you are healed, I will awaken." Tranquility walked closer to Chenoa until she actually walked into Chenoa's body.

Chenoa screamed as a huge power emitted from the merger between the two souls, and she soon slipped into unconsciousness.

----- Above the Sea -----

Kodia felt a jolt in the power and rushed towards the sea. Just as he did, a bright flash of light erupted in front of him and he heard a voice that seemed to have no source...

"Watch over her. She is your destined one."

Chenoa appeared right in front of Kodia, her appearance altered slightly. The most noticeable change was the front of her hair had become white, and her eyes are now light lavender instead of the deep violet they once were.

"Chenoa?"

----- End -----

"Chenoa?" Kodia asked as his new wife began to wake up. She sat up in bed immediately, disturbed by her last vision. She immediately starts asking him if he truly loves her, or if he only married her because of what he was instructed to do by Tranquility.

Kodia reassured her that he loved her long before Tranquility spoke of destiny, and after awhile she trusted him once more.
